Santa Ana Math Circle Volunteer Wins Scholarship

by Kevin Lee, University High School, Class of 2014

Sean Liu, a SAMC volunteer, was recognized by Raytheon for his presentation work at the program. He gave a powerpoint presentation of mental math tricks and other problem solving techniques to sixth and seventh graders at Lathrop Intermediate School, and for this demonstration of “math [putting] action in [his] passion”, Raytheon awarded him with a $1000 scholarship, as well as an additional $1000 going to his school to be used for math-related programs.

Santa Ana Math Club is run in collaboration by OCMC and the Santa Ana Unified School District. OCMC volunteers coach Santa Ana students in grades 4-7 to strengthen math skills and develop a love for math.

Sean helped teach the 6th and 7th graders along with the other volunteers. His powerpoint can be found here. It has also been submitted to the National Association of Math Circle website along with other SAMC lesson plans as part of a nationwide program to enhance inter-math circle relationships.
